Sajer FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions

Sajer FAQ:

Contacts:

Why do I want a list of checklists with each contact?

There are many uses for checklists with each contact.  Here are some examples.

1. You may have a checklist of each product or service provided by your company.   You can check off each product or service purchased by that contact.

2. You could have a list of questions to ask during a sales call.  As each question is asked of the contact, you could check off a response.

3. You could have a list of items to discuss with the contact at your next meeting.   Check off the items that were discussed.  Remaining items could be discussed at subsequent meetings.

Note that Sajer makes it easy to import checklist items.  You could create a list of checklist items, and then import that list for each new contact.  That makes it easy to add the same checklist items to each contact without having to reenter them by hand.

Can deleted contacts be recovered?

Yes.  Deleted contacts are not actually removed from the database.  They are stored in a special repository for deleted contacts.  They can be recovered at any time.  However, the repository of deleted contacts can be emptied.  However, after the repository is emptied, the contacts can not be recovered.

Notes:

Can I choose the fonts in which notes are printed?

Yes.  You can use any installed font.

What is contained in a note besides text?

A note can contains four different items.  All notes should have a subject to make it easy to reference the note.  Of course any note can have text, but it is not required.  A note can also include a checklist.  Finally, a note can include a list of external files on the computer, or on a network.  The note does not include the actually file, just a reference to its location.

Journal:

What is the encryption algorithm for journals?

The encryption algorithm is proprietary.  It was developed by Sajer and is not published.

How secure is the encryption for journals?

The reason for encrypting Sajer's journals is so that they can not be read by any program other than Sajer.  If the files were not encrypted, computer savvy people could use a powerful text editor to open your journal files and read the text bypassing the password protection.  The encryption is designed to stop these people.   However, the encryption is probably not strong enough to stop governments, major corporations, or trained cryptanalysts from reading the file if they really want to.

What if I want better file protection?

If file security is really important, you should consider getting a third party file locking program such as Norton's DiskLock by Symantec.

Can I keep multiple journals?

Yes.  Each journal is stored in a single directory on your file system.  You can have as many journals as you want as long as there is available disk space.

What if I forget my Journal Password?

Contact Sajer about obtaining the master password.

Schedule:

Can I schedule recurring tasks?

Yes, there are many options for scheduling recurring tasks.

Telephony and Screenpopping:

Can Sajer screen-pop to the correct contact on an incoming call from a PBX?

Yes.  Sajer maintains two lists of numbers for each contact.  The first list is the numbers you dial to reach the contact.  The second is the numbers reported by caller ID when the contact calls you.  If the contact calls from an office through a PBX, these lists will rarely be the same.  Each time a contact calls you, you can add the caller ID to the list of numbers to search for that contact.  Eventually, all reported caller ID values for that contact will be added to the list, and that contact will appear each time the contact calls you.

What type of hardware and software is required to screenpop to a contact on incoming calls?

The first software requirement is TAPI.  You must have TAPI installed on your computer.  TAPI is available free from Microsoft, and is probably on your computer already.

You must have hardware connecting your phone to a phone line.  For most home users, this will be your modem.  For businesses using a PBX switch, the method of establishing communications between the PBX and your computer is more complicated and will depend on the PBX manufacturer.  You will need to contact your PBX manufacturer for more information.

Finally, you need software to communicate between TAPI and your hardware.  If you are using a modem, your system is probably already configured for computer-telephony operations.  If your hardware is a PBX, you may need special software, such as a TAPI Service Provider (TSP) to enable TAPI to communicate with your hardware.

If you are using a modem, the modem must support caller ID, and report it to TAPI.   At this time, most modems do not do this.  You must check with the manufacturer of your modem.

Of course none of this works without caller ID support from your phone company.

Can I screenpop to a contact from another application?

Yes.  Make sure Sajer is running.  Execute another instance of Sajer passing the phone number as the command line.  Sajer will display contacts that match the phone number.

Can I dial contacts from Sajer?

Yes, if you have the TAPI installed on your computer and have the proper software and hardware.

How does Sajer handle telephone extensions?

You enter extensions next to the actual phone number.  One way to indicate an extension is to prefix the number with an x.  How Sajer interprets phone number depends on whether you are using North American dialing plan. Refer to the On-Line help topic "Entering Phone Numbers" for more information.

Can I screenpop to an extension number?

Yes.  On incoming calls, Sajer matches the caller ID with the full number and the extension.  If an extension is passed as the caller ID value, Sajer will display all contacts with extensions matching the caller ID.

Miscellaneous:

Can multiple users access Sajer files simultaneously?

No.  Only one user can access a Sajer file at a time.  There is no way share files between users (unless the files are shared as read-only).

Does Sajer include to-do lists?

Sajer includes a single checklist with each note, and a list of checklists for each contact.  These can be used as to-do lists.  Additionally, the Sajer schedule can act as a to-do list.

What kind of password protection is included in Sajer?

Only Journal files are password protected (the password is optional).  If you want to password protect other Sajer files, you should use a third party file encryption program.

Can I import information from other contact managers?

Yes.  Sajer includes direct import for ACT! and GoldMine.  Sajer can also import contact information from tab-delimited text files.   Sajer can also import journal files from text.

Can I export to other contact managers?

Some contact information can be written to tab-delimited text files.  However, there is likely to be at least some loss in data any time you export Sajer contact data to another contact database.  These is because the object-oriented database technology used in Sajer does not convert easily to the relational database technology used in many other programs.

Does Sajer make backup copies of its files?

Yes.  Of course you should always back up all files on your computer regularly.   All computer files are subject to permanent loss by hardware damage, computer viruses, or human error.

What type of database engine does Sajer use?

The Sajer product uses an object-oriented database engine of proprietary design.   The engine was developed by Sajer.  It does not use relational tables such as dBase, or MS Access.

Can I read Sajer files from another program?

Not really.  Sajer uses files in a proprietary format.  No other program can read the files and retrieve all file data.  However, there are programs, such as powerful text editors, that can be used to retrieve at least some of the data in Sajer files when used by a knowledgeable person.

Can Sajer database files be accessed through ODBC?

No.  Sajer uses a proprietary database.  There is no way to access database files through ODBC.

Can Sajer database files be accessed by other applications.

No.  Sajer uses a proprietary database.  No other applications can access the data.  However, providing the ability for other applications to access the data is a high priority for development in future versions of Sajer.

Does Sajer support the use of application macros?

No.  Sajer does not support application macros.

Is Sajer programmable using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA)?

No.  Sajer is not programmable using VBA.
